AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 42RLE DESCRIPTION The 42RLE (Fig. 1) is a four-speed transmission that is a conventional hydraulic/mechanical assembly controlled with adaptive electronic controls and mon-itors. The hydraulic system of the transmission con-sists of the transmission fluid, fluid passages, hydraulic valves, and various line pressure control. The 42RE (A500SE) uses electronic components to create governor pressure and the 42RH (A500) uses a mechanical governor to create governor pressure. First through third gear in the 42RE (A500SE) are provided by the clutches, bands, low roller clutch and planetary gear sets located in the transmission. Jeep Grand Cherokee started using the 42RE transmission in 1993 1/2 models with the 4.0L engine. The '4' stands for 4-speed, '2' is for torque capacity, 'R' is for rear-wheel drive, and 'E' is for electronically controlled. This transmission is electronically controlled using a governor pressure solenoid to vary the governor pressure.
